Sam Houston Park
It is a striking contrast to see such a modern city with a clear appreciation for it past as represented by these restored houses in a park adjacent to huge skyscrapers; two of the houses pre-date the founding of Houston. The Jack Yates House is located here as well; tour hours usually Mon-Sat 10a-4p and Sun 1p-5p, but call to confirm; 1100 Bagby downtown; 713-845-1000

Minute Maid Field
Houstonís new $265 million dollar baseball park built at the old train station has transformed the eastern of part of downtown with sold out crowds and lots of homeruns. The retractable roof ensures the best of all worlds Ė no rainouts, natural grass and air conditioning when it gets too hot.

Sesquicentennial Park
A man-made, charming terraced garden park that meanders along the Buffalo Bayou on he northern edge of downtown; the highlight of the park is seven 70 foot tall towers designed by artist Mel Chin from the inspiration of 1050 Texas school children born in 1986, the year of Texas and Houstonís sesquicentennial (from 1836); located just north o the Wortham center its a must see at night.

Astroworld Amusement Park
Across the freeway from the Astrodome, billed as the 8th Wonder of the World when it opened in 1960, one finds an enjoyable 75 acre park that features one of the best wooden roller coasters in the country and lots of other modern rides; 9001 Kirby Drive at South Loop; call for calendar of special events and schedule; 713-799-8404

Hermann Park
This nearly 400 acre park is home to the Houston Zoo, Museum of Natural Science, Burke Baker Planetarium, a golf course and garden; clearly one of the cityís favorite people places with joggers and bikers constantly on the move here; Fannin at Hermann Drive next to the Texas Medical Center.

Memorial Park
A 1466 acre park whose best feature is its 3 mile long jogging trail from I-610 to I-45 freeways on the edge of downtown. The park also features a golf course and nature center. Reached at several points off Allen Parkway.
Tranquility Park
A must visit when downtown; this park with several tall golden fountains has held up well over time; it was dedicated to the Sea of Tranquility where astronaut Neil Armstrong, on 20 July1969, said the first words from the moon, "Houston, Tranquility base here. The eagle has landed". Located between Smith, Bagby, Rusk and Walker

Moody Gardens
Located in Galveston, Moody Gardens has three wonderful pyramids including the Aquarium, a 12-story pyramid featuring marine habitats from the Edge of the Antarctic, the North Pacific, the Tropical Pacific and the Caribbean; it's also home to the King Penguin exhibit; guests can also escape the cold in the lush Rainforest Pyramid, explore life in space at the Discovery Museum and experience the thrills and spills of the 3-D IMAX Ridefilm Adventure and IMAX Theater; the park hosts a number of special events; 800-582-4673
